Day 1: Rendezvous in Turin in the afternoon/evening meeting as a group at the hotel foyer at 6pm. For those who arrive early or who have arrived from a long haul flight we have a yoga session to rejuvenate and awake prior to the evening’s activities. Tonight we will take an evening walk through Turin taking an apperitivo (small finger foods with spritz/wine/beer) before dinner an all inclusive dinner at one of our favourite ‘hole in the wall’ restaurants in Turin.
Day 2: Turin is well known for its Palace and villa gardens so what a better start to the day than a guided yoga at one of the Royal palaces, or you can choose to enjoy a lengthy breakfast in the gardens of our Hotel. Being that Turin is home to some of the oldest chocolate houses in the world it’s imperative that we commence the morning with a guided chocolate tasting at one of Italy’s and in fact the worlds most acclaimed artisan chocolate producers. Lunch will be at renowned Eataly Slow Food Supermarket, a food museum of all Italy’s culturally significant foods all under one roof, and a great place to pick up a few Italian foodie goods to bring home. Lunch today is at your own cost. After lunch we will transfer by bus 2 hours to our Alps destination in the Castelmango region where our base will be a small mountain top village that has been recently renovated, staying in stone cottages with incredible views of the Italian/French and Maritime Alps. Once settled we will take a gentle walk to see the mountain side open air milking of the cows that produce the famous Castelmango d’Alpeggio Cheese. This cheese has a 400 yr. old history of production for the Kings and Queens of Italy, thus it has the moniker of ‘The King of Cheeses’. Tonight we will dine at the mountainside Refugio eating traditional gnocchi and/or polenta with all the other sides of traditional mountain food. Get a good night’s sleep in the fresh air as we have a big walk in the morning.
Day 3: An early morning start will have those keen hikers take on the Cresta del Balou and the Colle della Margerita a 4-5 hour loop walking the ridge of the alps. Leaving at 6am we will see the sun slowly rise over the peaks as we ascend. Expect to see wild deer and array of butterflies and carpets of wildflowers all with the sound of the cow bells in the distance. All this walking will build a healthy appetite and arriving at back to base at lunch time it will be perfectly timed to sit down to a gourmet long lunch at one of the most remote restaurants in Italy. This afternoon will be time to relax and take in the serenity of the mountains with a sunset yoga session on offer. Dinner will be a catered picnic style under the stars dining on a collection of local produce and wines.
Day 4: A sleep in is on the cards this morning or an early morning stretch yoga if desired. This morning after breakfast we will meet the cheese maker and have him guide us through the process of creating the famous Castelmango d’Alpeggio Cheese, including seeing the stone cellars where the cheese is ageing and off course tasting the different stages of the maturing cheese. Following the cheese tasting we will take a 40 minute walk to the neighbouring mountain top village for lunch. After lunch we bid farewell to the Alps and will travel 2 hours to the hilltop village of Monforte D’alba which will be our base for the next 4 nights. You will stay in comfortable, centrally located accommodation with breakfast included. Once settled we will take a late afternoon walk through the cobblestone streets of this UNESCO village before an apperitivo and dinner at a most unusual wine bar.
Day 5: This morning we will start our day walking the Sentiera pathway through forest and vines from Monforte to Barolo where we will visit the wine museum and take a wander through the cobble stone streets stopping for a cafe and brioche before we continue our walk through the country side taking in small hamlets and hillside chapels along the way. Lunch will be served today in the gardens of a small restaurant where the husband and wife team will serve up some traditional Piedmontese cuisines with a modern twist. Our walk today will pass through farms, berry laden pathways and vines. With continuous changing scenery of the Alps, the rolling hills with castle top villages along the way. On our return walk to Monforte we will stop in at yet another Barolo Producing family taking a look at a fascinating cellar before retuning to our base in Monforte. After a freshen up we will then be picked up by driver to visit the charming town of Dogliani where we will take in an apperitivo in the town Piazza before walking up the stairs to the historical centre to dine under the stars for our evening meal. Driver will then return us back to hotel.
Day 6: An early morning yoga class is on offer this morning and is recommended as today you will be offered a gastronomic smorgasbord to digest! After breakfast we will commence our day with a truffle hunt with our local guide and his truffle hound in search of the black summer truffles in the local forests. Continuing our foraging we will then visit a local artisan cheese producer tasting our way through their sheep and goat cheeses. Taking our found truffles (or bought if we are unable to find! ) with us we are off lunch at an Osteria where the chef will prepare our truffles and cheese for us to consume with handmade fresh pasta…along with numerous other courses! Lunch today will be long, a degustation of at least 8 courses, in the gardens in true Italian style. From here we will call in on a well renown Barolo producing family to taste their wines and see their outstanding cellar. Late afternoon we will have you back in the village of Monforte where you may choose to take part in a light yoga session or a well earnt siesta before we meet for dinner at the local pizzeria where we will dine alfresco in the local Piazza.
Day 7: Join us for a farewell Yoga class in a Medieval Ampitheatre before a group breakfast before we depart for our diverse destinations. There will be a shuttle available to drop off to Alba, Asti and Milan Malpensa Airport
